The Society

The Abbeyfield concept is new to Canada, having originated in Great Britain in the 1950's. The idea is simple - it calls for a small affordable house where a small group of people over retirement age can live together while retaining their own rooms.

Each house is operated by a local volunteer committee that manages such affairs as property, maintenance and finance. The committee raises funds by mortgage and charitable donations. Once the house is set up all operating costs are shared by the residents, with the local volunteer committee managing the overall affairs of the home. The local society is autonomous, and is affiliated with the national group which provides information and advice as well as coordinating national activities.

Abbyefield House Annieville Society is a registered charitable corporation.
